Firehawks

This piece was written for an Introduction to Creative Writing course, specifically focusing on the natural world and our relation to it. For our midterm assignment, we were tasked with writing seven pages of original creative fiction, which resulted in this short story detailing a philosophical conversation between two birds on the edge of a forest fire.

 

I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because I believe it captures my ability to write compelling dialogue, as well as to explore a topic through character writing. I had been avoiding writing dialogue for some time before this piece was written, largely out of anxiety over whether or not I could write something readable. While I’m still not the most confident in my dialogue, this was a very welcome refresher.
