Identity and Location
This piece was written for my Indigenous Film & Media course, which explored depictions of Native American and other indigenous peoples within film over the course of history, as well as contemporary indigenous-made media. As an Advanced Seminar course, we were expected to write high-level argumentative papers, in this case comparing and contrasting a piece of indigenous-made media with one created by non-indigenous producers. I chose to compare Smoke Signals and Dances With Wolves, leading to the paper below.
This paper serves as a sort of culmination of my academic writing efforts, with significant amounts of revision and peer review going into the final product. Over the course of this piece’s production, I did some much-needed improvement on my editing process, and I’m much more comfortable in general with revising as a result. This piece hopefully reflects my ability to engage critically with topics which may be controversial, stating a well-thought-out argument without losing some level of nuance.
